Welcome to the UCF/HCA Florida Healthcare Greater Orlando/Lake Monroe Internal Medicine Residency Program website!

We are an exciting new Internal Medicine program that received initial accreditation from the ACGME in Spring 2023. Our inaugural class of interns began their journey on July 1, 2024 and as of July 1, 2025, we’ve proudly welcomed our second class!

The program is a partnership between two nationally recognized leaders in patient care and graduate medical education, the University of Central Florida and HCA Healthcare. Training occurs at HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital and surrounding community clinics. HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital is situated in Sanford, FL and directly overlooks the 8,771-acre lake that the hospital is named after. Sanford, FL is a part of the Greater Orlando Area and is less than 30 minutes from downtown Orlando.

The hospital was established in 1982 and is a Joint Commission accredited 221-bed acute care hospital. It serves the comprehensive healthcare needs of Seminole and West Volusia counties. It is a designated Level II Trauma Center and provides the highest level of stoke care in Volusia County. Services include a 22-inpatient acute physical medicine and rehabilitation center; orthopedic, spine, and advanced robotic surgery; and the only full-service cardiovascular program in the region.

Our program is focused on training the next generation of outstanding internists, while helping them achieve their professional aspirations through a wide array of clinical and educational opportunities. We are here to train physicians in an academic collegial environment that fosters a commitment to lifelong learning and well-being. Continually enhancing and improving the quality of care we provide to patients is critical to our program. We strive to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion within the medical profession and a establish a pipeline to provide comprehensive medical care to the Greater Orlando community for decades to come.

While the program is new, leadership has a strong background in Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Joshua Shultz, the program director, completed his Internal Medicine Residency training at the University of Illinois-Chicago and immediately joined as faculty for the UCF/HCA Internal Medicine Residency Greater Orlando/Osceola Program. He worked full time as an academic clinician, supervising residents both inpatient and at the continuity clinic. He has been the Transitional Year Program Director at Greater Orlando/Osceola for the last three years and was the Internal Medicine Assistant Program Director for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety.

Dr. Allison Ferrara, the Associate Program Director for Outpatient Medicine, completed her Internal Medicine Residency training at Brookwood Baptist Health in Birmingham, AL. She was a chief medical resident for the program as well. After completing residency and chief year, she initially worked as a hospitalist at Tulane University and eventually relocated to Orlando, FL to join as faculty for the UCF/HCA Internal Medicine Residency Osceola (Greater Orlando) Program. She has worked full time as an academic clinician, supervising residents both inpatient and at the continuity clinic. For the last three years, she served as the Clinic Director for the continuity clinic and has implemented and overseen numerous changes to improve workflow and patient care. In addition to being the associate program director, she will serve as the Clinic Director for the Lake Monroe Continuity Clinic.

Dr. Hasib Ibne-Rasa serves as the Associate Program Director for Inpatient Medicine. He completed his intern year at the University of Miami before continuing his Internal Medicine residency training at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
